Product Description

Type Here is a nice B & D Style A Super plectrum banjo with its original hard case, passed down from the original owner to his grand daughter who never learned to play it.  The condition is very good with little fret wear and only minor scratches to the wood and chrome components.  Overall the banjo has an appealing patina and no major issues.  The maple neck is smooth to the touch with no dings on the back of the neck that would impede playability.  The neck is straight, has an ebony fingerboard bound in ivoroid, 22 frets, and a bone nut I believe to be original.  The original Grover patent 2 tab tuners have been replaced by prewar Grover Patent pancake tuners with ivoroid buttons.  As always, B & D banjos have superbly delicate adornments in terms of wood selection and pearl inlaid designs on the peg head,  fingerboard and neck heel cap.  Quoting from the B & D 1924 catalog, "the banjo has an 11 inch maple rim, with a patent auxiliary tone chamber and Amplifier Back, half round spun metal bottom edge, notched top hoop, 28 brackets, Grover Patent presto tailpiece, and a Jos. Rogers skin head".  The French polished dark antiqued wood finish is original, and the nickel plated parts are in very fine condition.  Again, quoting from the B & D catalog, "the deep spun metal flange top rests on a large steel wire, which rests on top of the wood rim.  In back of the holes on the inside of the rim is an auxiliary tone chamber through which the tones must pass before emerging through the outer holes.  In this construction, with the Amplifier Back attached, a constant and prolonged vibration takes place, greatly adding to the solidity and increasing the tone quality and carrying power of the instrument".  What all this marketing department verbiage means in simple terms is that the banjo has a type 1 silverbell tone ring with a snap in resonator.  On the perch pole is stamped B & D Style A and serial # 137787.  Included with the banjo is an original hard shell case in fully functional condition.
