Here is one of the earliest Hofner 500/1 basses you may ever encounter. This bass was made in early to mid 1956. It has the original pickup placement for the two pickups with the neck pickup placed at the end of the fngerboard, and the bridge pickup positioned about 1 1/4 inches from the bridge. Hofner would re-position the bridge pickup by mid 1956, placing it much further from the bridge and much closer to the neck pickup.
This bass has original finish and all the parts and hardware are original as well. The finish is in very good condition with some dings and scratches to the solid spruce top, but none are bad enough to cause concern or to detract from the beautiful patina. Most of these dings and scratches are in the area of the bridge and the lead pickup. See the attached photos for a detailed look.
There is a well repaired crack on the side of the bass (bass side upper bout) - see the photo. The flamed maple back is in excellent condition with no cracks, no dings, a few surface scratches, and lacquer checking.
The bridge, the wood pickups, the tailpiece, the knobs, control plate, potentiometers, and tuning machines are all original. The pickguard is missing.
The case is a newer hardshell case.
